First preliminary final: Collingwood v GWS Giants preview

What a cracking contest this promises to be. The Giants have peaked at the right time of year and come into it with a full head of steam, while Collingwood have been sitting back and enjoying their much-deserved week off following an impressive 10-point win over Geelong in their qualifying final.

Truth be told, the Magpies probably would have preferred to face the Brisbane Lions because having endured so much September heartache in recent years, GWS are hungry for success and look like men on a mission.

While the Lions are finals newbies, the Giants are experienced campaigners and, after their 2017 preliminary final against Richmond, they already know what it’s like to play in a packed MCG cauldron full of opposition supporters.

But the Magpies didn’t get this far by accident (West Coast’s last-round loss to Hawthorn aside) and will be just as hungry as Greater Western Sydney for a victory, if not more so after their devastating five-point loss in last year’s grand final to West Coast.

The only hope they have of possibly making amends for that is by beating GWS and qualifying for another grand final. It doesn’t get much bigger than two teams facing off in the penultimate week of the season who are desperate to right the wrongs of Septembers past.

HISTORY LESSON

The Giants have definitely had Collingwood’s measure in recent times, winning three of their past four encounters.

Their last meeting ended up being one of Greater Western Sydney’s best victories of the season as they snapped a three-game losing streak by smashing Collingwood to the tune of 47 points at Giants Stadium.

On that occasion, GWS ambushed the Magpies, kicking eight goals to one in the first quarter, as Jeremy Cameron, Jeremy Finlayson and Harry Himmelberg dined out on Collingwood’s undersized defence, finishing up with 13 goals between them.

However, Darcy Moore didn’t play that day and, barring any unforeseen injury concerns, he will line up this time around after his stellar performance down back against the Cats in the first week of the finals.

In Collingwood’s favour, the one defeat they scored against the Giants in their past four meetings was in a final – last year’s semi-final encounter.

X-FACTOR

With Jordan De Goey already ruled out due to a hamstring injury, someone has to provide that spark for the Magpies up forward and that someone might just be Jamie Elliott.

Elliott has been in great form, kicking 10 goals in his past three games, and his performance against Geelong last time out stood out, in particular given it took place in a final.

He was one of the catalysts for Collingwood’s blistering opening term, kicking two of the Pies’ four first-quarter goals, as they jumped out to an 18-point lead at quarter-time and didn’t give up the lead for the rest of the night.

For the Giants, it’s hard to go past serial antagonist Toby Greene. He might have a reputation for playing very close to the edge, but he is also a brilliant footballer who can really do it all. Up forward or in the midfield, Greene’s influence will have to be curtailed, otherwise he could drag the Giants over the line on his own.

TACTICS

The Giants play their best footy when they’re overly aggressive and constantly in the face of their opponents. GWS are capable of intimidating any side in the league and battering them into submission, so physicality will be high on their agenda.

One of the key battles on that front will be Shane Mumford against Brodie Grundy in the ruck. There’s no doubt Mumford will be told to use his sizeable frame as a battering ram against the Collingwood superstar in an attempt to limit his output.

Meanwhile, Collingwood are hard to stop when they get their running game going and play their carefree, risk-taking brand of football which served them so well in the first half against Geelong recently. Teams who are hesitant and hold onto the ball against the Magpies are asking for trouble.

The Magpies also had the second-best defence in the home-and-away season, while the Giants ranked 12th for inside-50 differentials. Ordinarily, you’d think those stats would favour Collingwood, but in round 18 the Magpies won the inside-50 battle by 14, yet lost the game by eight goals and had seven fewer scoring shots.

PREDICTION

GWS have this steely determination about them following their two brilliant finals wins so far and they will be hellbent on avoiding a similar result to the last time they played a preliminary final at the MCG.

As it stands, the Giants are zero from two in preliminary finals and they will be desperate to avoid the tag of prelim specialists with another loss at this stage of the season.

But above all, they’ll want to finally qualify for a grand final after coming so close so many times recently.

They definitely won’t make it easy for Collingwood, but in Melbourne in front of over 95,000 black-and-white fans, it’s hard to see the Magpies not reaching the last Saturday in September yet again.

Collingwood by 11 points.

Match preview: Adelaide v St Kilda

What it means for Adelaide: This is a must-win game for the under-siege Crows who have lost four of their past five, but still remain in the top eight on percentage.

What it means for St Kilda: The Saints are revitalised under interim coach Brett Ratten, winning their past two games since parting ways with Alan Richardson. Another victory would keep their unlikely finals dream alive.

The stat: The Crows have won nine in a row against the Saints since 2012, with an average margin of 53 points. Seven of those nine victories were by 40 or more points. The Saints have an abysmal Adelaide Oval record, losing all nine times they've played at the venue.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Josh Bruce

Talia, the Crows' best key defender in the Official AFL Player Ratings (158th overall), will get the job on Bruce, the Saints' No.1 key forward (351st overall) who booted four goals in last week's win against Melbourne.

It’s a big week for: Don Pyke

The Crows coach has been under the pump in the wake of last weekend's loss to Carlton. After inviting the players over to his house, Pyke needs his team to stand up and produce a performance they're capable of to get their season back on track.

Big call: The Saints beat the Crows for the first time in eight years to throw the race for eighth spot wide open.

Prediction: Saints by eight points

Match preview: Melbourne v Richmond

What it means for Melbourne: With the pressure increasing on both Simon Goodwin and Melbourne's playing list, a top-four scalp would open the valve somewhat. It would also be only the Demons' third win in their past 11 games.

What it means for Richmond:  The Tigers' percentage took a battering at the start of the season but has slowly been on the improve. Saturday night could be a chance to boost it further.

The stat: Final term fade-outs have been a big issue for the Dees recently. Over its past four matches, Melbourne has conceded an average of 28.5 points in the final quarter, while managing an average of just 13.3 itself.

The match-up: Michael Hibberd v Dustin Martin

Hibberd held Martin to just 17 disposals the last time these sides met, the superstar Tiger's second-lowest tally for the year. The Dee, ranked 191 in the AFL Player Ratings, is versatile enough to take on Martin (11th overall) whether he's forward or in the middle.

It's a big week for: Simon Goodwin

After storming to a preliminary final last season, it's been a disastrous year for Goodwin and his Melbourne charges. The Dees have now dropped a game below Carlton in 17th place and are staring down the barrel of falling 13 places in 12 months.

Big call: Dylan Grimes is in red-hot form behind the ball and will finish with 12 intercepts.

Prediction: Tigers by 35 points.

Match preview: Greater Western Sydney v Sydney

What it means for GWS: After two courageous wins against Collingwood and Port Adelaide, the Giants must consolidate and maintain their form against the Swans to remain in the hunt for a top four finish.

What it means for Sydney: Finals are out of the equation, but the Swans have been extremely competitive in recent weeks. A high-intensity derby will be greatly beneficial to the young team.

The stat: The Giants' three tall forwards Jeremy Cameron (57), Jeremy Finlayson (34) and Harry Himmelberg (31) have 122 goals between them this season, and without their best key defender and co-captain Dane Rampe, the Swans could be in for a tough day.

The match-up: George Hewett v Lachie Whitfield

The underrated Hewett has had Whitfield's number before and is a chance to go to him again at Giants Stadium. The GWS star (No.63 in the ratings) is extremely damaging roaming all over the ground as a high half forward, but Hewett has the tank to run with him.

It’s a big week for: Tom Papley

The Swans' leading goalkicker was kept to just one goal from four possessions against Geelong last week, and if his side is any chance of causing an upset, the livewire small forward must have a big impact.

Big call: Kick kings Jake Lloyd and Heath Shaw will have a day out at Giants Stadium and finish the game with at least 50 between them.

Prediction: GWS by 38 points

Match preview: Essendon v Port Adelaide

What it means for Essendon: The Bombers have won five on the bounce and look destined for finals action. They escaped the Gold Coast with a 10-point win last week and could all but secure a top-eight place with victory.

What it means for Port Adelaide: This is the last-chance saloon for Ken Hinkley's side which must win to stay alive in the finals race. Port once again failed to deliver when it mattered last week – losing to GWS by one point. If Robbie Gray and co. can mastermind a victory, September will somehow remain within reach.

The stat: Port Adelaide does not hold the happiest of memories against Essendon at Marvel Stadium. The sides opened the Docklands ground back in March, 2000, with the Power suffering a 94-point thrashing. Their recent history isn't much better either, losing their past two by an average of 46 points at the venue.

The match-up: Scott Lycett v Zac Clarke.

Port's best chance of claiming a scalp rests on the broad shoulders of key ruck Scott Lycett. His counterpart Zac Clarke – ranked 36th in his position by the has improved slightly over recent weeks, but will face perhaps his toughest test to date this round. With Lycett likely to give Port first use, Essendon may find itself on the back foot.

It's a big week for: Travis Boak. The Power’s ex-captain has led by example all season, culminating in a 40-disposal effort last week. Boak has averaged 32.4 disposals per game this season, sitting only behind Collingwood’s Adam Treloar. The tough inside midfielder is also the Power’s leading clearance player and will need to continue in such a vein if their season is to stay alive.

Big call: Jake Stringer to continue his renaissance story with a season-best five goals, along with another dominant midfield cameo.

Prediction: Essendon by 34 points.

Match preview: Collingwood v Richmond

Where and when: MCG, Friday June 26, 7.50pm

What it means for Collingwood: The Magpies' season is quickly spiralling out of control. They've lost three of their past four games, two of them by at least 44 points, but a win against the Tigers will keep them in the top four.

What it means for Richmond: The Tigers seems to be timing their run to perfection, and a fifth successive win will lift them back into the top four for the first time since round 10. They also have the chance to gain some belated vengeance for last year's preliminary final drubbing.

The stat: The Pies have smashed the Tigers in their past two clashes, by 39 points in last year's preliminary final and by 44 points in round two, while restricting Damien Hardwick's men to just eight and 10 goals respectively.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v Jordan Roughead
Tigers spearhead Lynch (ranked No. 294 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) is moving into top gear but former Bulldogs big man Roughead (No. 220) has been one of the value recruits of the year. Lynch kicked three goals last time.

It's a big week for: Jason Castagna
The Richmond opportunist has been in good touch with eight goals in his past three games, but in his past two outings against the Pies he has averaged just nine possessions and tallied just one behind. This is his chance to shine against a depleted Collingwood defence.

Big call: After taking a remarkable piggyback speccy against Greater Western Sydney last week, spring-heeled Magpie Jeremy Howe will, for his next trick, complete a human pyramid screamer.

Prediction: Richmond by 21 points

Match preview: Brisbane v North Melbourne

What it means for Brisbane: After huge wins on the road against Greater Western Sydney and Port Adelaide this is another difficult test against one of the competition's in-form teams. A win would be a huge step towards a top-four finish.

What it means for North Melbourne: The Kangaroos simply must win to remain a chance of playing finals. Despite losing in the final 20 seconds against Essendon at the weekend, they have been terrific in the past seven weeks and would fancy their chances of an upset.

The stat: This match has, statistically, the two best ball-winners in the competition. Kangaroo Ben Cunnington has one more contested possession than Lion Lachie Neale (262-261) and two more centres clearances (50-48) to lead those two categories. Neale leads the AFL in clearances with 130, seven clear of Cunnington.

The match-up: Harris Andrews v Ben Brown

Let's not overcomplicate this. Andrews is one of – if not the – best key defenders in the game, and Brown is fresh off six goals and is one of the premier tall forwards in the competition. It should be an engrossing battle.

It’s a big week for: Daniel Rich

In the midst of the best season of his career, Brisbane half-back Rich will run out for his 200th game. He has disposed of the ball at least 19 times in every game this season and trails only Sydney's Jake Lloyd for the most metres gained in the AFL.

Match preview: Greater Western Sydney v Collingwood

What it means for GWS: The loss of Stephen Coniglio last week was another massive blow for the Giants, who have dropped four of their past five games. They must beat the Pies to arrest their form slump or the season might be over.

What it means for Collingwood: After last week's stunning upset on the road against West Coast, the Magpies are back in the important second spot. They must repeat the feat on the Giants' home deck if they want to stay there.

The stat: Collingwood dominated and kicked 3.6 to 0.2 in last year's semi-final to overwhelm the Giants at the MCG. The visitors fought back and only lost by 10 points, but they were helped by the Pies' poor accuracy in front of goal.

The match-up: Adam Treloar v Daniel Lloyd

The star Magpie, ranked 22nd in the Official AFL Player Ratings, has averaged 33.6 possessions per game this season and while he's not always a reliable kick, his running power hurts opposition teams. Lloyd (374th) did a solid job on Dustin Martin for most of the game last week and has the tank to go with the former Giant.

It’s a big week for: Toby Greene

Set for an extended stint as a midfielder with Callan Ward (knee), Josh Kelly (calf) and Coniglio (knee) missing, the gifted forward becomes even more important to the Giants. Greene found plenty of the footy and kicked two goals against Richmond last week and will need to produce big numbers against the Pies.

Big call: Harry Perryman will be given the task of limiting star Magpie Steele Sidebottom, and the tough youngster will keep the wingman under 20 possessions for just the second time this season.

Prediction: GWS by 11 points

Match preview: Carlton v Gold Coast

What it means for Carlton: The Blues would like to finish the season as strongly as possible and would sense blood in the water against the Suns. Victory on Saturday would move them above the Demons on the ladder, at least momentarily.

What it means for Gold Coast: After 12 straight defeats, the Suns will be searching for pride on Saturday. They produced arguably their worst performance of the season against the Crows last weekend and will be desperate for a response.

The stat: The Blues will be eyeing back-to-back wins for the first time in more than two years. They haven't done it since round 12-13 in 2017, when they defeated the Giants and the Suns.

The match-up: Matthew Kreuzer v Jarrod Witts

Kreuzer had his way against a depleted Swans ruck division last week, helping the Blues midfielders feast out of the middle to win the clearance count 45-32. He'll face an entirely different challenge on Saturday, coming up against the brute strength and power of Witts.

It's a big week for: David Swallow (Gold Coast)

The club's co-captain will be desperate to help turn the tide for the Suns after a horror performance last week. He's been in fine form this year, but will face an almighty challenge against Patrick Cripps on Saturday. Look for Swallow to stamp his authority on the contest.

Big call: Harry McKay has a career day as Blues ease to victory

Prediction: Carlton by 31 points

Match preview: Richmond v Port Adelaide

MCG, Saturday July 20, 1.45pm AEST.

What it means for Richmond: The push for top four continues. Now just two players – Toby Nankervis and Alex Rance – away from full-strength, the Tigers are finding form at just the right time.

What it means for Port Adelaide: The frustrating Port Adelaide form line has continued, but all expectations will be off, taking on a side with momentum at its home ground. It's the perfect opportunity for the Power to strike a crucial blow.

The stat: Robbie Gray has starred for Port Adelaide over the years but struggles against Richmond. He averages 15.7 disposals when playing the Tigers, his lowest tally against any side. Gray does like to hit the scoreboard, kicking 21 goals in 13 matches.

The match-up: Trent Cotchin v Travis Boak

The two veterans are a chance to go head to head in the middle of the ground. Both are strong contested ball-winners who love to go hard at contests, setting up their teammates on the outside.

It's a big week for: Ken Hinkley

The Power have once again been the Jekyll and Hyde of the 2019 season, winning games they shouldn't and dropping games they should win. Last week's loss to Brisbane at home was demoralising, and Richmond looms as a tough opponent to bounce back against.

Big call: The Jack Riewoldt-Tom Lynch combination will click into gear, with the pair kicking seven goals between them.

Prediction: Tigers by 25 points

Preview: Adelaide v Essendon

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Friday, July 19, 7.20pm ACST

What it means for Adelaide: Last weekend's 95-point thumping of Gold Coast was a nice confidence boost, but it will count for little if the seventh-placed Crows can't back it up against better competition.

What it means for Essendon: Having won five of their past six games, the in-form Bombers can take another step towards booking a finals berth by knocking off the Crows, who are directly above them on the ladder.

The stat: The Crows kicked the highest score in the club's history against the Bombers in round 10, 2006 at Football Park. Trent Hentschel booted eight goals as the Crows smashed the Bombers by 138 points – 30.8 (188) to 6.14 (50).

The match-up: Eddie Betts v Adam Saad
Little separates this pair – Betts is 99th overall while Saad is 101st in the Official AFL Player Ratings. The Bombers defender kept Betts goalless last year, but the Crows veteran is high on confidence after booting six goals against the Suns.

It's a big week for: Rory Sloane
The Crows co-captain will receive close attention from Bombers youngster Dylan Clarke, who added North Melbourne star Ben Cunnington to his list of successful tagging assignments last week. Sloane will have to be creative and have his teammates block for him at stoppages.

Big call: Reilly O'Brien to dominate in the ruck with at least 45 hitouts and 10 clearances.

Prediction: Crows by 15 points

Match preview: Adelaide v Richmond

What it means for Adelaide: This is a huge opportunity for the Crows (7-5) to push themselves into the top four on the back of their stunning win against Greater Western Sydney last Saturday night.

What it means for Richmond: The Tigers have to pick themselves up off the canvas after back-to-back losses to North Melbourne and Geelong. A third straight defeat will have the Tigers clinging to their spot in the top-eight.

The stat: The Crows hold a 24-14 advantage in the overall meetings between the two clubs, but 13 of those wins came from 15 games between 2000-10. The Tigers have won two of the last three against the Crows, including the 2017 Grand Final.

ADELAIDE v RICHMOND

Thursday 13 June, 7.20pm at the Adelaide Oval

CROWS

B: Keath, Talia, Brown
HB: Kelly, Hartigan, Laird

TIGERS

FOLL: Soldo, Graham, Caddy
I/C: Stack, Higgins, Menadue, Naish
EMG: Chol, Weller, Bolton, Eggmolesse-Smith

IN: Broad, Ellis, Menadue

OUT: Edwards (hamstring), Cotchin (hamstring), Townsend (omitted)

The match-up: Josh Jenkins v Dylan Grimes

Jenkins has returned to form since having a stint in the SANFL. He's the second-ranked Crows key forward in the Official AFL Player Ratings (171st overall). Grimes is the second-ranked small to medium defender at the Tigers (169 overall), but he'll get the job on Jenkins.

It’s a big week for: Matt Crouch

The Crows midfielder plays his 100th career game. The 23rd pick in the 2013 national draft, Crouch is averaging 31.6 disposals per game this season and made a successful return from a hip injury in last weekend's win against Greater Western Sydney.

Big call: The Crows to get out to a big lead at three-quarter time before hanging on for a close victory.

Prediction: Crows by 12 points

Match preview: Collingwood v Melbourne

Where and when: MCG, Monday June 10, 3.20pm AEST

What it means for Collingwood: A win would complete a successful first half of the season before the third-placed Pies enjoy a well-earned rest, but a second successive upset loss at the MCG would raise some doubts.

What it means for Melbourne: Simon Goodwin's team needs to recapture some semblance of the uncompromising brand they created last year, and only that will do against a rebounding Collingwood. Victory could kickstart the 16th-placed Demons on a long road to recovery.

The stat: The Demons have been hot favourites in their past two clashes against the Pies but have failed miserably on both occasions – by 16 points in the last round of 2017, thus missing the finals, and by 42 points in last year's Queen's Birthday clash.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Max Gawn

In the eyes of many, Magpie big man Grundy (ranked No.3 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has taken over from Demon counterpart Gawn (No.1) as the AFL's premier ruckman, so here's the perfect opportunity to settle it – at least for now.

It's a big week for: Sam Weideman

It'll also be a long week for the young key forward after he fluffed a chance to be the hero in his AFL return against Adelaide in Darwin, missing an otherwise regulation set shot in the dying seconds. He'll be keen to atone in his first Queen's Birthday game against the club his father and grandfather represented.

Big call: Demon accumulator Clayton Oliver to break the handball record of 35 held by Crow Matt Crouch.

Prediction: Magpies by 23 points
