Match preview: North Melbourne v Richmond

Marvel Stadium, Friday May 31, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 8, 2018: North Melbourne 11.6 (72) lost to Richmond 12.10 (82)

Ben Cunnington's AFL-record 32 contested possessions almost inspired the Roos to an unlikely victory over the Tigers. Richmond led by 26 points nearing half-time, but an upset was on the cards when North Melbourne hit the lead barely two minutes into the final term. Trent Cotchin was brilliant for the winners, amassing 37 touches in the midfield.

What it means for North Melbourne: The Kangaroos' first match of the post-Brad Scott era has the potential to be a letdown after the emotional events of the past week. However, they will be keen to give caretaker coach Rhyce Shaw a winning start and put the drama behind them.

What it means for Richmond: It might not even be the halfway point of the season, but there is a competitive race going for a top-four spot and the Tigers will be keen to bank another win, knowing how valuable they will be down the track.

How North Melbourne wins: Winning the ruck battle is a non-negotiable, with Todd Goldstein – fresh from almost 60 hitouts a week ago – holding a significant experience edge over Ivan Soldo. Giving his foot soldiers the first look at the Sherrin is the first link in the midfield chain.

How Richmond wins: Barring the round seven loss to the Western Bulldogs, the Tigers have been exemplary in defying a lengthy injury list with major names on it. The success to date has depended on contributions from lesser lights, and more of the same is required.

The stat: Richmond has won its past two encounters with the Roos after losing seven of the previous eight clashes.

The match-up: Robbie Tarrant v Tom Lynch

The Tigers say power forward Lynch (No.271 in the AFL Player Ratings) will be fit to face North Melbourne despite his corked calf, but he won't have an easy time of it against Tarrant (No.239). Tarrant, at his best, has the ability to hurt the former Sun the other way, too, if Lynch's movement is hampered whatsoever.

It's a big week for: Rhyce Shaw

Who else? This section is normally reserved for players, but Shaw is in the spotlight this week as his senior coaching career, albeit as a caretaker, makes a sooner-than-expected start. The dual AFL Coaches' Association Assistant of the Year has aspirations to officially win a senior coach job at some stage and his audition begins now.

Big call: Sydney Stack does something, anything – a high mark, brutal hip and shoulder or spectacular goal, for instance – to have us all raving about his football story.

Prediction: Tigers by 24 points

Match preview: Brisbane v Fremantle

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday, May 26, 3.20pm local time, 5.20pm Queensland time.

Last time they met: Optus Stadium, round 15, 2018: Fremantle 9.10 (64) lost to Brisbane 18.11 (119)

Things started going downhill for Fremantle before the opening bounce when Aaron Sandilands suffered a calf strain, and it didn't get better with Nat Fyfe tearing a hamstring in the second term. In Sandilands' absence, Lions ruckman Stefan Martin dominated in the club's first road victory in a year.

What it means for Brisbane: Only one of the Lions' six wins has come outside Queensland – and that was against battling North Melbourne in round two. Victory in the west would not only boost their top-eight chances, but also fuel belief they are good enough to play in September.

What it means for Fremantle: The Dockers have tumbled from second to ninth after three-straight losses and, with Collingwood at the MCG to come before the bye, another defeat at home would be a major blow to their finals aspirations.

How Brisbane wins: The midfield needs to stand up against Fyfe and co. Brisbane has enough quality in Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko, Hugh McCluggage and ruckman Stefan Martin to win the onball battle and put the brakes on Fremantle's scoring.

How Fremantle wins: The Dockers are averaging 88.4 points from five games at Optus Stadium and will create enough chances to kick a winning score, but they have got to be more efficient going inside 50 and take their opportunities.

The stat: Neale's League-best 305 disposals is the most by a Brisbane player after nine rounds, with Craig Lambert's 266 touches in 1996 the next best, according to Twitter statistician @sirswampthing.

The match-up: Nat Fyfe v Lachie Neale

Fyfe is the second-best footballer in the competition, according to the AFL Player Ratings, and Neale is coming with a bullet – climbing from 12th to seventh this year alone. The former Freo duo might not go head-to-head, but both average eight clearances and will have a major say on the outcome.

AFL Preview: Saints V Blues

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Sunday, May 26, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: Docklands Stadium, round 17, 2018: St Kilda 16.20 (116) beat Carlton 7.10 (52)

An elevated heart rate for brave Blues ruckman Matthew Kreuzer ended his night just minutes into the clash. The Saints would dominate the contest and added to the Blues' pain in a season they ended up with the wooden spoon.

What it means for St Kilda: Coming off four straight losses after a difficult month, the 4-5 Saints can put themselves in a position to contend for finals, with Port Adelaide and Gold Coast to come after the Carlton clash.

What it means for Carlton: The Blues have been competitive in seven of their nine games but have been disastrous in two of their past three outings, against North Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney. Victory would be a sign of improvement.

How St Kilda wins: Don't drop off. The Saints have been reasonably consistent, considering how much talent they have sidelined and having faced flag contenders the past three weeks. They need to keep their effort up.

How Carlton wins: Patrick Cripps can't have 12 disposals, like he did against the Giants. It's fair to assume he won't either. The Carlton co-captain is an absolute jet and will respond.

The stat: St Kilda has won four in a row over Carlton. Before that, Carlton won four in a row over St Kilda. Before that, St Kilda won four in a row over Carlton. Are the Blues about to start a run of four straight wins over the Saints?

The match-up: Jack Steele v Patrick Cripps

The Saints stopper went head to head with the Blues superstar last time round, and while he couldn't limit Cripps, both were prolific. Cripps is ranked No.8 in the Official AFL Player Ratings, while Steele is No.53.

It’s a big week for: Brendon Bolton

The pressure is red-hot on the Blues coach, as it should be. He's been in charge since the end of 2015 but in his fourth season, there are serious questions over how long this rebuild is taking. It's time the club starts winning.

The heat continues to be turned up on Blues coach Brendon Bolton. Can he stop the rot? Picture: AFL Photos

Big call: Carlton to lead for 90 per cent of the contest, before the Saints finish hard late and pinch the win.
Prediction: St Kilda by 11 points

Match Preview: Melbourne Demons vs GWS Giants

Where and when: MCG, Sunday May 26, 1.10pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 23, 2018: Melbourne 15.12 (102) defeated GIANTS 8.9 (57)

A five-goal third term sealed a vital top-eight scalp for Melbourne as it hurtled towards its first finals series in 12 years. Ruckman Max Gawn set the tone for the Dees, while Stephen Coniglio, who spent time forward, was the GIANTS' best.

What it means for Melbourne: A clear signal that Melbourne's season is back on track. The Demons showed signs against West Coast they were returning to their exciting 2018 form but couldn't quite get over the line.

What it means for the GIANTS: A rare win at the MCG. Leon Cameron acknowledged the GIANTS' poor record at the ground Grand Finals are played at, and a win just two weeks after losing to Hawthorn at the venue will help.

How Melbourne wins: Employing the strong defensive pressure and discipline shown against the Eagles, as well as improving their skill execution, particularly in front of goal.

How the GIANTS win: Shutting down James Harmes. The hard-running midfielder has been highly influential in the Demons' past three matches and is capable of breaking the game open with a goal or two.

The stat: Nathan Jones enjoys playing the GIANTS. The Melbourne co-captain averages 27 disposals a game against the GIANTS, his highest average against all sides in the competition.

The match-up: Max Gawn v Shane Mumford

They're two of the most influential ruckmen in the competition, and are more than capable of dominating a match at their peak. Gawn is currently ranked first in the AFL Player Ratings, with Mumford 361st overall.

It's a big week for: A GIANT MCG hoodoo

Hot off a comprehensive 93-point win over Carlton, the GIANTS will have their confidence up, but will be facing their bogey ground. The GIANTS have played 16 games at the MCG over their 7.5 years in the AFL for just two wins.

Big call: Jeremy Cameron to rebound from a rare goalless match to kick a bag of five

Match preview: Richmond v Essendon

MCG, Saturday, May 25, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 22, 2018: Richmond 12.9 (81) defeated Essendon 11.7 (73)

Missing key midfielders Trent Cotchin, Kane Lambert and Dion Prestia, the Tigers held on to seal a tight win after the Bombers kicked the last four goals of the game. Dustin Martin was Richmond's best, while Devon Smith led the way for Essendon.

What it means for Richmond: An opportunity for a surprise top-four berth. Given Richmond's injury list and the calibre of players on it, few would have expected the Tigers to have won as many games as they have.

What it means for Essendon: A win would go some way to stabilising a topsy-turvy season, levelling the win-loss ledger at five apiece. The Bombers have also lost 10 of their past 12 to the Tigers.

How Richmond wins: Using its multi-pronged attack to its advantage. Richmond's forward line is starting to really hit its straps, and they should have too many avenues to goal for Essendon to counter.

How Essendon wins: Exploiting Richmond's lack of height around the ground. Hawthorn looked dangerous while it had two fit rucks playing, both up forward and around the ground.

The stat: Saturday night marks the 15th Dreamtime at the 'G match, with Richmond having won eight games and Essendon saluting on six occasions. Dustin Martin is the only two-time winner of the Yiooken Award for best on ground.

The match-up: Sydney Stack v Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti

An unlikely match-up at the start of the season, but it's set to be a highly entertaining one. The pair are as tough as nails, with Stack the fourth-highest first-year player in the AFL Player Ratings (516th overall), while the Bomber is rated 82nd overall.

It's a big week for: John Worsfold

It's been a strange season for Essendon, recording wins over Melbourne, Brisbane, North Melbourne and Fremantle interspersed with disappointing losses. Knocking off a confident Richmond side would be a real feather and a step towards being a legitimate finals contender.

Big call: Daniel Rioli will force his way back into the side and kick three goals wearing the Dreamtime guernsey he designed with his parents.

Prediction: Tigers by 25 points

Gold Coast Suns vs Geelong Cats AFL Free Live Streaming Online on Saturday 25th May 2019 online,Time: 2:55 PM (IST), 7:25 PM (AEST).

2019 AFL Footy Gold Coast Suns vs Geelong Cats Free Live Streaming Online,The AFL match will be kick off at Metricon Stadium, Saturday 25th May 2019 online,Time: 2:55 PM (IST), 7:25 PM (AEST) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell. Watch AFL 2019 Live Stream online on your Desktops, Laptops, Mac, Tablets, Smart Phones, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android device, Apple TV and latest browsers. Live Stream online live with HD quality.

Match preview: Gold Coast v Geelong

Metricon Stadium, Saturday, May 25, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: GMHBA Stadium, round 23, 2018: Geelong 22.10 (142) defeated Gold Coast 5.10 (40)

The final round of the season resembled a training run for Geelong. With their spot in the top eight already secure, the Cats ran riot against a Suns outfit that was depleted, dispirited and looking for the season to finish. Patrick Dangerfield was best afield with 34 disposals and four goals.

What it means for Gold Coast: The Suns are hoping to continue their strong form in front of their home fans. Despite losing five straight matches overall, Gold Coast has been more than feisty at Metricon Stadium, winning two from four and losing in the final second to Melbourne last time at home.

What it means for Geelong: The Cats are rolling, sitting a game plus significant percentage clear at the top of the ladder. They've won five straight – and are undefeated away from home – and will be out to maintain that buffer in first place with another victory here.

How Gold Coast wins: With some luck. The Suns have proved to be scrappy and largely outplayed most pre-season predictions to date, but to win they'll need the Cats to be below their best. Nothing short of four quarters at their top intensity will do.

How Geelong wins: As long as the Cats don't treat the trip north like a holiday, they should have too much class. If they can match the hard-at-it Gold Coast midfield, the outside class should provide the multi-faceted forward line plenty of chances to kick a winning score.

The stat: Geelong is the most free-scoring team in the competition and the only one to average more than 100 points a game. Conversely, Gold Coast is stuck at the bottom of the scoring table, averaging 61 points a game – eight fewer than the next lowest, Melbourne.

The match-up: Mitch Duncan v Ben Ainsworth

While some bigger-name teammates often get the headlines, Duncan is having another super season for the Cats. Meanwhile, Ainsworth is quickly emerging as the most skilled Sun from their batch of high-end draft picks. Both spend plenty of time on the wing, while also moving onball, and can cause havoc for the respective teams forward of centre.

It's a big week for: Chris Scott

Milestones often fly under the radar for coaches, but Scott will coach his 200thmatch for Geelong, third on the club's list behind Reg Hickey (304) and Mark Thompson (260).

Big call: Gold Coast to win the contested possession count but lose the match

Prediction: Cats by 35 points

Preview: Adelaide v West Coast

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, May 25, 4.05pm ACST

Last time they met: Adelaide Oval, round 15, 2018: Adelaide 12.16 (88) beat West Coast 12.6 (78)
The Crows came from 27 points down in the third quarter, booting six consecutive goals to stun the Eagles. Co-captain Taylor Walker led the way brilliantly with three second-half goals, while Rory Laird and Matt Crouch had big games.

What it means for Adelaide: The Crows (seventh, 5-4) will be looking to bounce back after last weekend's nail-biting one-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba.

What it means for West Coast: The reigning premiers (sixth, 6-3) are aiming for their fourth straight victory, which could put them inside the top four by the end of the round.

How Adelaide wins: The Crows need to improve their forward pressure and lock the ball inside their attacking half of the ground. They also can't kick long and high into the forward line and allow the Eagles' defenders to pick them off with ease.

How West Coast wins: Expose the Crows with their pace on the outside. Small forwards Willie Rioli, Liam Ryan and Jack Petruccelle all have the leg speed to trouble the Crows' defenders.

The stat: The Eagles don't have any fears about playing at Adelaide Oval, having won seven of their nine games at the venue. They are 2-2 against the Crows at the ground in four meetings.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Josh Kennedy
The experienced Crows defender will have another tough challenge, going up against one of the premier key forwards in the competition. Talia is the highest-ranked key defender at the Crows in the Official AFL Player Ratings, and 156th overall, while Kennedy – coming off four goals against Melbourne last weekend – is the second-highest ranked key forward at the Eagles, behind Jack Darling, and 177th overall.

It’s a big week for: Taylor Walker
The Crows co-captain needs one goal to reach 400 goals for his career. He's second on the club's all-time goalkicking list, behind only mercurial high-flyer Tony Modra on 440.

Big call: Eddie Betts to produce something special in Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicking a goal of the year contender among his five majors.

Prediction: Adelaide by 15 points

Match preview: Western Bulldogs v North Melbourne

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday May 25, 2:10pm AEST

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 21, 2018: North Melbourne 12.13 (85) defeated by Western Bulldogs 13.14 (92)

A half-time lead of 28 points and finals hopes both evaporated for North Melbourne as the Western Bulldogs piled on eight goals in the third quarter. Lachie Hunter, Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel all had 40-plus possessions in Dale Morris' 250th game, while Ben Brown kicked four goals.

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: The Dogs are one of five sides sitting a game outside the top eight and with a trip to face reigning premiers West Coast before the bye, taking care of business against the 17th-placed Roos is a must.

What it means for North Melbourne: Three of the Kangaroos' last four games have been competitive losses, with a win against Carlton. They did beat Adelaide earlier in the season, but they'd want another scalp to generate belief.

How the Western Bulldogs win: Linking via handball and getting supply inside 50 has served the Dogs reasonably well. The Roos are one of the few sides that handball more frequently, but the Dogs have been more effective.

How North Melbourne wins: Ben Brown has kicked 15 goals in the last four games against the Dogs' well-documented smaller defence. The key forward is the focal point.

The stat: These teams like taking games down to the wire. The previous six clashes have been decided by 16 points or fewer with the Bulldogs holding a 4-2 ascendency.

The match-up: Jared Polec v Jason Johannisen

Line-breaker and quality ball-user is a combination in the X-factor category and both Polec (89th in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and Johannisen (132nd) have those skills. The stars have averaged 22 disposals apiece this season and could play a defining part.

It's a big week for: Bailey Smith

Named the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in round nine, Smith has fitted in seamlessly and provided an exciting dynamic to a gritty Dogs midfield group. Pick No.7 in last season's draft accumulated 28 possessions against Geelong and is an increasingly prominent influence on games.

Big call: Both sides hit the ton in a free-flowing shootout.

Prediction: Western Bulldogs by 18 points

Match preview: Hawthorn v Port Adelaide

Where and when: University of Tasmania Stadium, Saturday 25 May, 1.45pm AEST

Last time they met: University of Tasmania Stadium, round 11, 2018: Hawthorn 9.10 (64) defeated Port Adelaide 9.7 (61)

Port Adelaide used the wind to surge into a four-goal lead at quarter time, only to be quickly pegged back by the hosts. In a low-scoring clash, Hawthorn eventually overcame its plucky opponents. Tom Mitchell claimed the Brownlow votes with 28 disposals and two goals.

What it means for Hawthorn: After a superb win over the Giants and a competitive performance against the Tigers, the Hawks might be better than the 'middle of the road' team Alastair Clarkson thinks they are. It's time to prove that against the Power.

What it means for Port Adelaide: Already a game and a significant percentage gap ahead of the Hawks, a win here would really shore up the Power's spot inside the top eight. Given the Hawks are likely to be a main rival for a finals spot, victory on the road would be sweet.

How Hawthorn wins: By slowing the tempo of the game down, getting the match on their terms and then – crucially – by using the knowledge of playing in Launceston to their advantage.

How Port Adelaide wins: By overwhelming the Hawks in the ruck. With in-form big man Ben McEvoy under a cloud, there's a real opportunity for Port Adelaide's twin towers to gain a significant aerial advantage.

The stat: Hawthorn's record in Launceston is fantastic, winning 25 of its last 28 games there.

The match-up: Jaeger O'Meara v Travis Boak

Both are the experienced heads among younger teammates in their respective midfield groups. O'Meara appears at the top of his game, while Boak is enjoying a superb resurgence after he was pushed back into the centre this season.

It's a big week for: Jonathon Ceglar

Port Adelaide has employed a dual ruck set-up for much of the year, rotating Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder through the middle. Meanwhile, Ceglar might have to do it all himself with the Hawks sweating on scans for in-form big man Ben McEvoy. It's an imposing task.

Big call: Luke Breust overwhelms Port Adelaide's reliable backline to kick five goals.

Prediction: Hawthorn by 19 points

2019 AFL Footy Live Sydney Swans vs Collingwood Magpies Free Live Streaming Round 10 Free Online,The AFL match will be kick off at SCG Stadium, Friday 24 May 2019 online,Time: 3:20 PM (IST), 7:50 PM (AEST) and its broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtell. Watch AFL 2019 Live Stream online on your Desktops, Laptops, Mac, Tablets, Smart Phones, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android device, Apple TV and latest browsers. Live Stream online live with HD quality.

Match preview: Sydney v Collingwood

Where and when: SCG, Friday May 24, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: SCG, round 20, 2018: Sydney 11.7 (73) defeated Colingwood 10.11 (71)

Alex Johnson made an emotional return to senior footy to inspire his side to a thrilling win. Lance Franklin's six goals were the difference and he was awarded the three Brownlow medal votes, but young forward Tom McCartin was the hero. The Pies kicked three late goals to snatch the lead before McCartin booted a goal while lying on his back to give Sydney the victory.

What it means for Sydney: Two close wins over the past two weeks has given the young Swans confidence but they'll face a much sterner test from the Pies. It will show them exactly where they stand.

What it means for Collingwood: With the four teams just one game behind them on the ladder all facing tough challenges this weekend, a Pies win could give them a handy eight-point buffer in second spot in an incredibly even season.

How Sydney wins:  The Swans can't match Collingwood's star-studded side for talent or experience, but they've shown over the past fortnight if they scrap and pressure the opposition, they can be more than competitive.

How Collingwood wins: The Pies midfield is full of stars and with a dominant ruckman in Brodie Grundy, it looks to have far more dangerous players than the Swans can cover. If Grundy gets on top of Callum Sinclair, he'll be a match-winner.

The stat: Collingwood faced a serious challenge from St Kilda last week but showed it was a class above the Saints in the final term. The Pies kicked 6.6 to one goal in the last quarter to show just how powerful they can be.

The match-up: Callum Sinclair v Brodie Grundy

The Swan hasn't been able to match his 2018 form this year but has improved his output in the past month, and he'll need to be at his very best to match Grundy around the ground and at stoppages. If the big Magpie imposes himself physically on the contest his fleet of gun onballers will destroy the home side.

It’s a big week for: George Hewett

The Swans midfielder won 20 contested possessions and nine clearances against North Melbourne last week and is more than just a stopper these days. Hewett will get another huge job on Friday night on Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Beams or Adam Treloar, or could even be thrown onto the wing to try to curb the influence of Steele Sidebottom.

Big call: Inspired by his brother Ben's return to senior footy with Collingwood, Swan Sam Reid will emerge from his form slump to boot six goals for the home side, while Ben will boot four.

Prediction: Collingwood by 28 points

EMG: O’Brien, Kennedy, Garlett, Fasolo

IN: Macreadie, Newman

OUT: Plowman (injured), Williamson (injured)

What it means for the GIANTS: With two disappointing losses to lower-ranked teams in the past month the GIANTS lost a golden opportunity to get ahead of the pack, so must consolidate against the lowly Blues.

What it means for Carlton: Respect. Competitive losses aren't acceptable anymore for the Blues, and if they're after a challenge to get them going, the GIANTS at home is a monster.

How the GIANTS win: They struggled for any momentum going forward against the Hawks, but back on home soil the GIANTS midfield will be too powerful for the Blues. Expect a tsunami of scoring opportunities.

How Carlton wins: Led by skipper Patrick Cripps, the Blues must make it a scrap. If they can stop the GIANTS' run and make it hard for their forwards to find one-on-ones, they might have a sniff.

The stat: The GIANTS had 36 scoring shots from just 65 inside-50s when they pummelled the Blues late last year. No backline can stop that sort of efficiency or supply, and if the home side's runners get freedom again, it'll be a Sunday to forget for Carlton.

The match-up: Sam Taylor v Charlie Curnow

The GIANTS youngster might be ranked 454th in the Official AFL Player Ratings, but he should get first crack at the big Blue (126th) inside 50. Taylor is athletic and an outstanding defender one-on-one, so has the ability to follow Curnow wherever he goes. Phil Davis and Harry McKay will be another crucial battle.

It's a big week for: Marc Murphy

With Cripps likely to have Matt de Boer as a tag, the former skipper must have a big day if the Blues are any hope of an upset. Murphy must use all his experience and class to get his hands on plenty of footy and hurt the GIANTS

Big call: Carlton key defender Liam Jones will return from concussion to hold Coleman Medal leader Jeremy Cameron to two goals or fewer, but it won't bother the GIANTS, with Toby Greene booting six to find his best form of the year.

Match preview & Team: Richmond v Hawthorn

MCG, Sunday May 19, 3:20pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, qualifying final, 2018: Richmond 13.17 (95) defeated Hawthorn 9.10 (64)

A vintage Dustin Martin performance led Richmond to a comprehensive qualifying final win in soggy conditions. Kamydn McIntosh surprised to kick three, as did Jarryd Roughead, while midfield duo Jaegar O'Meara and Tom Mitchell starred for the Hawks.

RICHMOND v HAWTHORN

Sunday 19 May, 3.20pm at MCG

TIGERS

C: Ellis, Vlastuin, McIntosh

HF: Baker, Caddy, Bolton

OUT: Nil

What it means for Richmond: A chance to continue blooding kids while banking wins. The injury-hit Tigers have had their speedbumps this year, but have been boosted by the performance of their young players.

What it means for Hawthorn: The first time the club will have two consecutive wins for the season, and an opportunity to go ahead in the win-loss ledger for the first time since round three.

How Richmond wins: Pure manic run and pressure. Richmond will relish returning to the MCG and its small forward brigade is starting to work well with tall recruit Tom Lynch.

How Hawthorn wins: Exploiting Richmond's hole in the ruck. With Toby Nankervis set to miss due to a groin injury, Ben McEvoy and Jonathon Ceglar are well-placed to take advantage of the inexperienced Ivan Soldo.

The stat: Richmond and Hawthorn have played each other 158 times. Over that time, the Tigers average 91 points in those matches, while the Hawks average 90.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v James Frawley

Frawley turned back the clock with a vintage performance on the competition's leading goalkicker Jeremy Cameron, holding him goalless. The Tigers' one key forward, Lynch, is building match fitness and is crucial in bringing the ball down for the smalls.

It's a big week for: Dustin Martin

After a quiet few weeks by his lofty standards, Martin is beginning to show some of his best. He's struggled without the hamstrung Trent Cotchin, but against Fremantle was crashing packs and tackling hard, finishing the match with a trademark goal.

Big call: With boosted confidence after a breakout game, Shai Bolton will follow up with another four-goal haul.

Prediction: Tigers by 17 points

Match preview & Team: Port Adelaide v Gold Coast

Adelaide Oval, Sunday May 19, 12.40pm ACST

Last time they met: Adelaide Arena at Jiangwan Stadium, round nine, 2018: Port Adelaide 11.16 (82) beat Gold Coast 6.6 (42)

The Power made it two from two in China against the Suns with a scrappy 40-point win in wet conditions. Travis Boak, Sam Powell-Pepper and Tom Rockliff were the best for the Power, while the Suns received strong contributions from Jarrod Witts and Jarrod Harbrow.

PORT ADELAIDE v GOLD COAST SUNS

Sunday 19 May, 1.10pm at Adelaide Oval

POWER

B: Broadbent, Clurey, Houston

HB: Lienert, Howard, Byrne-Jones

SUNS

B: Harbrow, Collins, Ballard

HB: Miles, Hombsch, Weller

C: Holman, Martin, Powell

HF: Lukosius, Wright, Corbett

F: MacPherson, Sexton, Ainsworth

FOLL: Witts, Swallow, Bowes

I/C: Fiorini, Joyce, King, Murdoch

EMG: Brodie, Day, Horlin-Smith, McLennan

IN: Fiorini, King, Joyce

OUT: Hanley (injured), Lemmens (injured), Miller (injured)

What it means for Port Adelaide: Back-to-back losses to Collingwood and Adelaide have put the Power (4-4) back in the pack. A win against the Suns is essential to get the Power some much-needed momentum.

What it means for Gold Coast: The Suns (3-5) must regroup after their last-second one-point loss to Melbourne last weekend. The Suns have been competitive most weeks but need to convert those near-chances into victories.

How Port Adelaide wins: Converting their chances inside the 50m arc. The Power kicked nine goals from 69 inside 50s in last weekend's Showdown loss to Adelaide, including an inaccurate 3.12 in the first three quarters.

How Gold Coast wins: Turning the game into a low-scoring scrap. The Suns have kicked 61, 73 and 59 points in their three wins this season. They don't have the offensive firepower to come out on top in a shootout.

The stat: The Suns recorded their first win in club history with a three-point upset of Port Adelaide in round five, 2011. But the pendulum has swung back to the Power since then – winning the next nine meetings between the two clubs by an average margin of 44 points.

The match-up: Paddy Ryder v Jarrod Witts

While Ryder will split time with Scott Lycett in the ruck, his athleticism and tap work when he does go in the middle will be a big challenge for Witts. Ryder is the fifth-ranked ruck in the competition in the AFL Player Ratings, with Witts ranked 10th.

It's a big week for: Jack Hombsch

Suns defender Jack Hombsch played 98 games for the Power before requesting a trade at the end of last season after falling out of their best 22. He will have a point to prove against his former club.

Big call: After kicking two goals in the last quarter against the Crows, the Power will again throw key defender Dougal Howard forward and he'll boot five goals in a comfortable win over the Suns.

Prediction: Power by 31 points

Match preview: North Melbourne v Sydney

Blundstone Arena, Saturday, May 18, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 17, 2018: Sydney 16.8 (104) defeated North Melbourne 15.8 (98)

Aliir Aliir pounced on the loose ball and ran into an open goal inside the last two minutes to ensure the Swans exacted revenge from similar circumstances earlier in the season. Sydney kicked six majors to North's three in the final term to overcome an 11-point deficit.

What it means for North Melbourne: Another chance to add credibility. The Roos crushed Carlton and challenged Geelong in the last fortnight, so will fancy their chances of knocking off Sydney – and will have expectations of doing that.

What it means for Sydney: The Swans won a thriller against Essendon last week to put some of the external doom and gloom behind them. Beat North Melbourne and the perception of their rebuild will be decidedly rosier.

How North Melbourne wins: Dominating contested ball. That seems obvious for any side, but Sydney has the worst contested possession differential in the competition in 2019, so there is a real opportunity for the Roos.

How Sydney wins: North's been vulnerable down back this season because of injuries and the pending return of superstar Lance Franklin might be ideal timing. However, much depends on supply, with the Swans also ranked last for inside-50 differential.

The stat: Luke Parker, who was outstanding last week, has dipped below 20 disposals against North Melbourne just once, in 2011, and averages 25.8 possessions in total across 11 games.

The match-up: Robbie Tarrant v Lance Franklin

The Roos' best defender (ranked No.246 in the AFL Ratings) against the Swans superstar (No.12). Tarrant's been a rock in defence this year with a bevy of injuries around him, while Franklin is due back from three weeks out with a hamstring setback.

It's a big week for:

North showed faith in Jy Simpkin during his early season struggles and he's slowly regained form. Simpkin was one of four Roos with double-digit contested possessions last week and another dose of the same would go a long way to the blue and white prevailing.

Big call: Lance Franklin to kick six goals in his first game back from injury.

Prediction: North Melbourne by 22 points

Match preview: Essendon v Fremantle

Marvel Stadium, Saturday May 18, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 18, 2018: Essendon 13.21 (99) defeated Fremantle 11.4 (70)

Orazio Fantasia was the star with five goals and three Brownlow Medal votes as the Bombers crashed past the Dockers with a comfortable 29-point win. They had 19 more scoring shots, so it could have been a far bigger victory as they made a late dash to (nearly) make the finals.

What it means for Essendon: The Bombers are on a three-game losing streak and need a victory to stay in touch with the top eight. To fall to 3-6 after nine rounds would nearly spell curtains for their finals hopes, so they need to bounce back after last week's loss to the Swans, who were 18th on the ladder at the time.

What it means for Fremantle: Ross Lyon's men are hanging on to eighth position on the ladder after a promising start to the year. An away victory in their first game in Melbourne for the season would add to an encouraging first eight weeks.

How Essendon wins: There needs to be better use of the ball heading into Essendon's forward half. Too many times when the Bombers are under the pump they simply bomb the ball long, a tactic that is especially dubious given their lack of tall forwards through injury at the moment.

How Fremantle wins: Containing skipper and gun midfielder Nat Fyfe, Freo's midfield has the big body that often troubles Essendon's on-ball brigade. If Fyfe gets going like he did last week against the Tigers, when he had 33 disposals and three goals, John Worsfold will have concerns.

The stat: Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti hasn't kicked a goal in any of Essendon's losses this year, but has booted 13 in their three wins. If the Dockers stop him, the stats say they'll go a long way to stopping the Dons.

It's a big week for: David Zaharakis

Last week was the third-straight game the senior Bombers midfielder has not hit 20 possessions (he had 19 against the Swans). Essendon needs him firing.

The match-up: Tom Bellchambers has had a solid season but has shouldered Essendon’s ruck duties for most of the year. He will come up against an in-form and more athletic big man in Freo’s Rory Lobb this week, fresh off 45 hitouts, 19 disposals and a goal last week against Richmond.

Big call: Despite the perfect conditions under the Marvel Stadium, the sides struggle to score in an inefficient display that combines for only 20 goals.

Prediction: Essendon by six points.

Preview: Adelaide v Brisbane

Where and when: The Gabba, Saturday May 18, 2.10pm AEST

Last time they met: The Gabba, Round 18, 2018: Adelaide 13.15 (93) defeated Brisbane 13.10 (88)
Adelaide put a halt to Brisbane's three-game winning streak with a nail-biting late-season victory. Matt Crouch (40 disposals) dominated in the midfield, while Hugh Greenwood kicked four goals – and hit the post twice – to lead the attack in the absence of suspended skipper Taylor Walker.

What it means for Brisbane: Victory would likely push the Lions back into the top four and erase Saturday's loss to the Western Bulldogs. Brisbane has won three out of its four matches at the Gabba this year, a trend it would like to continue as it searches for a true home ground advantage.

What it means for Adelaide: It doesn't seem that long ago the Crows were getting hammered for a slow start to their season – now they're sitting in third place on the ladder. A fifth straight win here, interstate, would start to justify the pre-season hype and help separate the Crows as a top-four candidate.

How Brisbane wins: Get back to the pressure level that has defined its early-season success. With some question marks over their defence, the Lions rely on winning the contested ball and keeping it in their forward 50.

How Adelaide wins: In Brisbane's three losses this season, the opposition blueprint is there. Match the Lions around the contest and if you can get the ball inside 50 quickly, to one-on-one contests, you can usually have success scoring. Got to win the ball in tight first, though.

The stat: Three-time All Australian Jeremy McGovern has taken 26 intercept marks this season – but that doesn't lead the competition. The man with that honour is Adelaide defender Alex Keath, who has 28.

The match-up: Darcy Gardiner v Tom Lynch
Gardiner looks perfectly suited to play on Adelaide's third tall forward. Lynch is quietly having another excellent season, averaging 21 disposals and six marks and is the perfect link between the Crows' midfield and forward line.

It's a big week for: Charlie Cameron
It's been more than 18 months since Cameron left the Crows following the 2017 Grand Final, but after foot surgery wiped out the second half of last year, this will be the first time the small forward has faced his former club.

Big call: Brisbane to be the first team to score 100 points this season against the Crows
