Match preview: Adelaide v Richmond

What it means for Adelaide: This is a huge opportunity for the Crows (7-5) to push themselves into the top four on the back of their stunning win against Greater Western Sydney last Saturday night.

What it means for Richmond: The Tigers have to pick themselves up off the canvas after back-to-back losses to North Melbourne and Geelong. A third straight defeat will have the Tigers clinging to their spot in the top-eight.

The stat: The Crows hold a 24-14 advantage in the overall meetings between the two clubs, but 13 of those wins came from 15 games between 2000-10. The Tigers have won two of the last three against the Crows, including the 2017 Grand Final.

EMG: Chol, Weller, Bolton, Eggmolesse-Smith

IN: Broad, Ellis, Menadue

OUT: Edwards (hamstring), Cotchin (hamstring), Townsend (omitted)

The match-up: Josh Jenkins v Dylan Grimes

Jenkins has returned to form since having a stint in the SANFL. He's the second-ranked Crows key forward in the Official AFL Player Ratings (171st overall). Grimes is the second-ranked small to medium defender at the Tigers (169 overall), but he'll get the job on Jenkins.

It’s a big week for: Matt Crouch

The Crows midfielder plays his 100th career game. The 23rd pick in the 2013 national draft, Crouch is averaging 31.6 disposals per game this season and made a successful return from a hip injury in last weekend's win against Greater Western Sydney.

Big call: The Crows to get out to a big lead at three-quarter time before hanging on for a close victory.

Prediction: Crows by 12 points

Match preview: Collingwood v Melbourne

Where and when: MCG, Monday June 10, 3.20pm AEST

What it means for Collingwood: A win would complete a successful first half of the season before the third-placed Pies enjoy a well-earned rest, but a second successive upset loss at the MCG would raise some doubts.

What it means for Melbourne: Simon Goodwin's team needs to recapture some semblance of the uncompromising brand they created last year, and only that will do against a rebounding Collingwood. Victory could kickstart the 16th-placed Demons on a long road to recovery.

The stat: The Demons have been hot favourites in their past two clashes against the Pies but have failed miserably on both occasions – by 16 points in the last round of 2017, thus missing the finals, and by 42 points in last year's Queen's Birthday clash.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Max Gawn

In the eyes of many, Magpie big man Grundy (ranked No.3 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has taken over from Demon counterpart Gawn (No.1) as the AFL's premier ruckman, so here's the perfect opportunity to settle it – at least for now.

It's a big week for: Sam Weideman

It'll also be a long week for the young key forward after he fluffed a chance to be the hero in his AFL return against Adelaide in Darwin, missing an otherwise regulation set shot in the dying seconds. He'll be keen to atone in his first Queen's Birthday game against the club his father and grandfather represented.

Big call: Demon accumulator Clayton Oliver to break the handball record of 35 held by Crow Matt Crouch.

Prediction: Magpies by 23 points

Match preview: Sydney v West Coast

Where and when: SCG, Sunday June 9th, 3.20pm AEST

What it means for Sydney: Another massive test. The Swans have taken it right up to Collingwood and Geelong over the past fortnight, but the Premiers are in menacing form, and an upset would be huge going into the bye.

What it means for West Coast: Back in the top four after five straight wins, the Eagles must keep rolling to stay in touch with the best teams. They realise just how important it will be to secure home finals and they're right in the hunt again.

The stat: Superstar Sydney forward Lance Franklin booted 8.1 and 2.5 in his team's two wins over West Coast last year and he'll need to be the difference again if the Swans are to go into the mid-season bye with a boil over.

The match-up: Tom McCartin v Jeremy McGovern

The young Swan is a fierce competitor and must make sure the Eagles’ three-time All Australian defender is accountable inside Sydney’s forward 50. McGovern (No. 28 on the AFL Player Ratings) is a huge presence and sets up plenty of West Coast attacks with his reading of the game from half back.

It’s a big week for: Dane Rampe

The local boy who was overlooked at multiple drafts before the Swans threw him a rookie lifeline, has turned himself into one of the game's best defenders and an All Australian. Rampe's 150th game will give his teammates even more motivation to knock off the visitors.

Big call: Andrew Gaff has averaged 32.8 disposals in nine games this year with a lowest total of 29, but Ryan Clarke will do a job on the star wingman, and keep him to less than 20 touches.

Prediction: Eagles by 21 points

Preview: Adelaide v Greater Western Sydney

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, June 8, 7.10pm ACST

What it means for Adelaide: The eighth-placed Crows (6-5) are just keeping their head above water in the finals race, but a win over a genuine premiership contender would be a massive statement.

What it means for Greater Western Sydney: The second-placed Giants (8-3) are rolling nicely on the back of three straight wins. The Crows would be their most significant scalp since knocking off Geelong in round four.

The stat: The Crows have won eight of the 11 meetings between the two clubs, but the Giants won both of the encounters last year. The Giants also went a perfect two from two at Adelaide Oval in 2018, and have a 3-5 record overall at the venue.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Jeremy Cameron
Talia – the Crows’ premier key defender in the Official AFL Player Ratings -  faces one of his biggest challenges of the season. Cameron – the Giants’ best forward - has been in unstoppable form, leading the Coleman Medal race with 38 goals.

Big call: Harry Himmelberg to kick five goals

Adelaide have named co-captain Rory Sloane to face GWS, but doubt surrounds Bryce Gibbs' future at the AFL club after he was dropped for the third time this season.

Gibbs was axed despite a solid effort in last week's two-point win over Melbourne, while Sloane is battling to overcome a hamstring strain and must pass a fitness test to face the Giants at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

Adelaide, who have just one player - Tom Doedee - on their injury list, also dropped Hugh Greenwood and David Mackay and left No.1 ruckman Sam Jacobs out despite five goals in the SANFL last week in his return from injury.

Midfielders Matt Crouch and Richard Douglas were the other inclusions for the eighth-placed Crows.

Zac Williams and Sam Taylor are in for the second-placed Giants, who lost Lachie Whitfield to a collarbone injury and dropped Lachie Keeffe.

Geelong regained Gary Ablett and Rhys Stanley for the match-of-the-round against Richmond at the MCG on Friday night.

The Tigers added Daniel Rioli, Jacob Townsend, Jack Graham and Patrick Naish, who will debut, with David Astbury and Brandon Ellis out injured and Nathan Broad and Shai Bolton omitted.

Dale Thomas' VFL exile for breaking Carlton's team rules lasted one week, the veteran included with Lochie O'Brien, Mitch McGovern and Kade Simpson for the clash with Brisbane on Saturday, the club's first match since Brendon Bolton's sacking.

Jacob Allison replaced Ben Keays in the only unforced change made by the Lions ahead of the Marvel Stadium encounter.

Jarrod Harbrow, Will Brodie and Touk Miller are in for Gold Coast who host North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Kangaroos brought in Sam Durdin for the injured Jamie Macmillan.

Ruckman Tom Hickey is one of six inclusions to an extended West Coast squad for Sunday's clash with Sydney at the SCG, with skipper Shannon Hurn out with a hamstring injury.

Robbie Fox is the only definite departure from the Swans squad through injury.

Mason Cox, Brayden Sier and Isaac Quaynor are among the Collingwood inclusions for the Queen's Birthday game against Melbourne at the MCG.

Dayne Beams, who will spend up to three months on the sidelines after hip surgery, was the only definite out announced on Thursday night.

Steven May and Jake Lever have been named in the extended Demons squad.

Match preview: Gold Coast v North Melbourne

Where and when: Metricon Stadium, Saturday June 8, 4.35pm AEST

What it means for Gold Coast: After losing to premiership fancies Greater Western Sydney and Geelong in the past fortnight, it's the first genuine chance for a few weeks to break a seven-game losing streak. A win would reinvigorate the Suns as the second half of the season begins.

What it means for North Melbourne: Another chance to solidify the Rhyce Shaw regime. After taking over from Brad Scott as coach last week, Shaw got off to the best possible start with a physical, high-pressure demolition of Richmond.

The stat: Historically, Gold Coast has done as well against North Melbourne as it has against any other opponent. The Suns have won five from 11 matches (a winning percentage of 45), which is identical to their record against Carlton. They are 3-3 at Metricon Stadium.

The match-up: David Swallow v Ben Cunnington

Two of the hardest men in the AFL should square off in the midfield. Cunnington (No.9 in the AFL Player Ratings) is ranked second in the competition for both total clearances and centre clearances and although Swallow (No.104) might not always be his direct opponent, the influence of both around the stoppages will go a long way towards determining the result.

It’s a big week for: Jack Ziebell

Big milestone for the Kangaroos skipper this week as he chalks up game number 200. Ziebell has shifted from the forward line back into the midfield in recent weeks and was excellent in the win over the Tigers. He has lost in games number 50, 100 and 150.

Big call: Ben Brown kicks six

Prediction: Kangaroos by 11 points

Match preview: Carlton v Brisbane

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday June 8, 1.45pm

What it means for Carlton: A fresh start after the sacking of coach Brendon Bolton on Monday. The shackles will probably be released so expect the battling Blues to at least try to play attacking football.

What it means for Brisbane: A golden opportunity for a percentage-boosting win over the in-crisis bottom team, although coach Chris Fagan will be wary of the prospect of an immediate response from the Blues.

The stat: The Lions have won just one of their past six games against Carlton at Marvel Stadium. They haven't faced each other there since 2016.

The match-up: Harris Andrews v Harry McKay

This clash looms as an exciting duel between two of the game's best young exponents of contested marking: Lions star Andrews (ranked No.29 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and improving Blues forward McKay (No.350).

It's a big week for: David Teague

What it means for Brisbane: A golden opportunity for a percentage-boosting win over the in-crisis bottom team, although coach Chris Fagan will be wary of the prospect of an immediate response from the Blues.

What it means for Carlton: A fresh start after the sacking of coach Brendon Bolton on Monday. The shackles will probably be released so expect the battling Blues to at least try to play attacking football.

The former North Melbourne and Carlton defender has been asked to fill the coaching void left by Bolton's departure and he appears well equipped for the role, having coached VFL club Northern Bullants before assistant coaching roles with West Coast, St Kilda, Adelaide and Carlton.

Big call: Free of the burden of external expectation, the Blues will lead into the last quarter before being overrun.

Prediction: Lions by 19 points

Match preview: Richmond v Geelong

Where and when: MCG, Friday June 7, 7.50pm AEST.

What it means for Richmond: An upset win over the top team in the competition would send a message that last week's disappointing loss was an aberration. It would also keep the Tigers in the top eight.

What it means for Geelong: The MCG has not recently been a happy hunting ground for Geelong when playing Richmond, and a win against a top-eight side would be a confidence booster ahead of September.

The stat: Richmond lost 20 of 21 matches to Geelong between 2001 and 2017, before breaking the streak in the qualifying final of that year. The Tigers have now won the past three games between the two clubs.

The match-up: David Astbury v Tom Hawkins

It’s a big week for: Richmond's midfield

Coach Damien Hardwick said the team was "smacked around" against North Melbourne, losing the contested ball by 22 and tackle count by 17. It's not going to be any easier against the likes of Cats Tim Kelly, Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood.

Big call: In his second week back in the side after a hamstring injury, Trent Cotchin will find his feet and finish with 30 touches.
